Burr Ridge, IL August 26, 2004 -- Ferris Mfg. Corp, an innovative leader in wound care solutions reports that a clinical study, entitled "A Polymeric Membrane Dressing with Antinociceptive Properties" published by the prestigious American Pain Society in the February 2004 issue of The Journal of Pain, shows that there is definite help for the estimated 90 million Americans suffering with chronic pain. The authors, Alvin J. Beitz, PhD and Alan R. Kahn, M.D. of the University of Minnesota, examined a dressing called PolyMem PlusŪ and its effect on "hyperalgesia" or the increased sensitivity to touch registered as pain or sensibility to pain. The authors state that pain accompanies most types of penetrating wounds including those caused by sharp objects, lacerations, bullets and incisions. They report that the extent and quality of pain in most cases are directly related to the severity of the injury, particularly injuries to deep tissue structures. The incidence of pain remains high in wounds and injuries despite the many medical advances made.

In their study, the scientists found that the PolyMem PlusŪ dressing reduced the spread of inflammatory cells from wound sites into the surrounding muscle. The scientists revealed that the inflamed area was significantly smaller when wrapped with the PolyMem PlusŪ dressing. They also determined that there was a significant decrease in pain (hyperalgesia) when the wounds were wrapped with PolyMem PlusŪ. In the article, the scientists concluded that PolyMem PlusŪ produces a local analgesic effect, relieving pain when applied to the skin and that it is useful for both increasing wound healing and reducing pain associated with a variety of wounds, deep lacerations, surgical incisions, or other types of injuries.
